‘Trackable pint’ stunt highlights cost of pint glass loss for UK pubs

Campaign draws attention to persistent operational cost facing hospitality businesses.

A ‘trackable pint glass’ unveiled as part of an April Fool’s campaign has drawn attention to a very real and costly issue facing the UK hospitality sector: the theft of glassware.

The concept, named PintGuard, imagined a pint glass embedded with tracking technology that would allow operators to locate missing stock. Led by catering equipment supplier Stephensons, the campaign was designed to highlight the estimated £133 million lost each year to missing pint glasses across the UK.

For many operators, glassware loss is often treated as an unavoidable part of running a venue. However, in a climate where margins are under sustained pressure, even relatively small, repeat costs can have a meaningful cumulative impact.

Henry Stephenson, managing director at Stephensons, said: “There’s a long-standing perception that taking a pint glass is harmless, but for operators it represents a real and ongoing cost. When you look at the £133 million figure across the UK, it becomes clear that this is more than just a minor inconvenience.”

The PintGuard concept was developed as a way of opening up that conversation in a way that would resonate, while remaining mindful of the realities operators face.

Stephenson continued: “We wanted to acknowledge that pint glass theft sits in something of a cultural grey area – I think we all know somebody who has a branded or commemorative pint glass or two in their collection. But ultimately, this is something that affects the bottom line of our customers, and we take that very seriously.”

In response, Stephensons is offering a 10% discount on its range of glassware in the first week of April, providing operators with a practical way to replace lost stock and manage costs more effectively.

Stephenson added: “This is all about supporting our customers. If we can help operators stay on top of ongoing costs like glassware replacement, that’s where we can make a meaningful difference.”
