Ascott makes its debut in the Nordic region with landmark Finland signing, expanding Oakwood’s European footprint and strengthening its growing resort portfolio
May 2026 – The Ascott Limited (Ascott), the lodging business unit wholly owned by CapitaLand Investment (CLI), has announced the signing of its first property in the Nordic region under the Oakwood brand, with a new premium resort development bordering Finland’s Nuuksio National Park. Scheduled to open in early 2028, the property marks Oakwood’s debut in Finland and Ascott’s continued expansion across Europe.
Bordering Nuuksio National Park, one of Finland’s major national parks spanning 5,300 hectares of forests, lakes and trails, the resort will offer guests a nature-led retreat just 40 minutes from central Helsinki, 30 minutes from Helsinki Airport, and close to Espoo, Finland’s 2nd largest city. Combining the tranquility of the Finnish wilderness with proximity to Helsinki’s metropolitan area, the property is expected to appeal to both leisure travellers and corporate retreat groups seeking immersive outdoor and wellness experiences.
The signing with Hotel Nuuksio Ltd to manage Oakwood Nuuksio Helsinki, reflects Ascott’s growing momentum in the resort sector, as the company continues to capitalise on strong global leisure travel demand. Ascott’s multi-typology brand strategy has driven a series of resort signings across destinations including Phuket, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Bali, Seville, Vienna and Helsinki, expanding its portfolio in resort destinations to more than 50 properties globally.
The existing 65-room hotel will undergo a full renovation and repositioning under the Oakwood brand, alongside the introduction of a new wing featuring 160 guestrooms, bringing the total to 225.
Oakwood Nuuksio Helsinki will bring a new hospitality offering to the Finnish market. Designed to cater to the growing “bleisure” travel segment, the brand provides guests with a seamless balance between work and leisure through thoughtfully designed spaces, experience-led stays and a commitment to responsible tourism.
The resort’s facilities will include an all-day dining restaurant, unique private dining experiences inspired by traditional Nordic outdoor cooking, an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre and approximately 1,350 square meters of meeting and event space. A new lakeside “Sauna World” will also be developed as part of the transformation, featuring traditional Finnish saunas alongside hot and cold-water pools overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Inspired by Finland’s four distinctive seasons and the increasing global demand for wellness and nature-based travel, the property will offer experiences ranging from snow hiking and cross-country skiing in winter to forest yoga, foraging, canoeing, in addition to ice-diving and survival skills. The peaceful environment, often likened to the atmosphere of Lapland, creates an immersive escape that reflects Oakwood’s focus on ‘Restorative Wellness’ within easy reach of the city.
The signing supports Ascott’s strategic focus on expanding in high-growth leisure destinations and introducing its brands into new international markets. Finland continues to attract growing interest from travellers across Europe, the United States and Asia, driven by demand for cooler climate destinations, outdoor adventure and authentic Nordic experiences.
Juha Björnman, Owner of Hotel Nuuksio Ltd, commented: “We are very pleased that The Ascott Limited, an international and responsible operator, will help enable the long-term growth of Hotel Nuuksio’s business. With more than 40 years of expertise, a strong brand portfolio and extensive experience in developing hospitality businesses globally, Ascott is well positioned to take Hotel Nuuksio to the next stage. The aim is to provide guests with an experience that combines Finnish nature, responsible tourism, high-quality accommodation and experiential event services”.
“Following SBHC’s work to both refine the Nuuksio project vison through a comprehensive feasibility study and lead the operator selection process, Ascott emerged as the preferred partner. The group was recognised for its strong expertise in resort operations, global brand portfolio, alignment with the project’s core values, as well as its ability to unlock the untapped potential of the Nordic resort segment. As Kimmo Virtanen, CEO of SBHC, commented: ‘The time has come for the market to fully recognise the attractiveness and true potential of the Nordic resort sector.’”
Ngor Houai Lee, Managing Director, Europe at The Ascott Limited, said: “This signing marks an exciting milestone for Ascott as we introduce the Oakwood brand to Helsinki Nuuksio National Park. As our first Ascott property in the Nordic market, it also reflects our continued focus on expanding our European portfolio into exceptional destinations. With its unique setting, the property will be well-positioned to offer a distinctive blend of wellness, nature-immersed experiences, and curated Meeting & Events offerings, catering to both leisure and corporate travellers seeking for high-quality stays”.
Upon completion, the resort is expected to become a leading premium hospitality and conference destination in the Nuuksio region, combining contemporary accommodation, extensive wellness facilities and immersive outdoor experiences within one of Finland’s most striking natural landscapes.
